Thesis Presentation

2020/21 has been a very unique year. The graduating batch of students was unable to receive in-person instruction. Nearly all classes were delivered online through Microsoft Teams. It has also increased the difficulty to create, collaborate, and complete their assignments. Reduced access to studios and equipment, along with restrictions to whom they can photograph and where, limited some of their opportunities to create as intended. However, the students persevered.

One of the program’s major projects occurs in the 3rd semester. They have finished their first year of instruction. They have taken the Spring and Summer to grow their skills and then have returned to their second year. Photographic Thesis is a project in which the students are tasked with selecting a topic. This is perhaps one of the more difficult parts of the project in that they will be devoting the next 12 weeks towards this topic. Their topic is one that should provide them with inspiration and be within their skillset. A successful topic will also give the student a set of images that they can use to promote themselves in their desired industry. Once a topic has been selected, they are to plan their sessions with a formal proposal, storyboards, and meetings with their instructor. They are then to capture 15 images from 15 sessions that support and illustrate their topic.

Once they are finished with capturing and processing their images they then take their images, some video (if they choose), music and create a multimedia presentation of their project. These presentations are then put into a larger class presentation in which they present at the NAIT Shaw Theatre to a live audience.

Due to the restrictions in place, and for the safety of the students, staff, family, friends, and colleagues, the 2021 Thesis presentations were unable to be held in person as it has been for as long as we can remember. This year they created a video presentation that premiered on Youtube this past Saturday. We have posted it here for you to watch and we encourage you to leave your support for these students who have persevered in a time when inspiration and opportunity seemed to be at odds.
